Happy Land

A short drive from the centre of Manila you will see sign for Happy Land. Happy Land is a place far from what the name leads you to believe. Happy Land is Manila's slum that has sprung from the rubbish dumps of the city.

It is a area where the poor survive in extreme poverty, battling disease and malnutrition. Shanty huts are built from whatever materials can be scavenged and, "... chicken scraps are collected from takeaway's garbage bins then recycled by boiling. It's called 'pagpag', and it's sold to hungry families in the slums for a few pesos.".

Amazingly, despite their life challenges, I greatly admire the people of Happy Land as they can still able to laugh and smile.

When looking at this man, I just think why most of us complain over our way of life we should just think how many of us are so lucky never to be in this mans shoes. A superb image. 5*
