Happy Land

A short drive from the centre of Manila you will see sign for Happy Land. Happy Land is a place far from what the name leads you to believe. Happy Land is Manila's slum that has sprung from the rubbish dumps of the city.

It is a area where the poor survive in extreme poverty, battling disease and malnutrition. Shanty huts are built from whatever materials can be scavenged and, "... chicken scraps are collected from takeaway's garbage bins then recycled by boiling. It's called 'pagpag', and it's sold to hungry families in the slums for a few pesos.".

Amazingly, despite their life challenges, I greatly admire the people of Happy Land as they can still able to laugh and smile.

On est loin de l'ambiance bretonne ici ;-) des conditions de vie bien difficiles, mais comme tu le dis les gens sont quand même souriants et heureux de vivre dans les pays pauvres. Une belle découverte !

I have a condo unit in Bacolod city on Negros island. Behind our complex are shacks, some build directly over a swamp full of mosquitoes. I ventured over there one day to take photo's and to get to know some of the inhabitants. I admire these people because the heat is horrible and there is no relief, they are tough and complain little. People ask why I go there, its because it grounds me, makes me appreciative of my opportunities I have had in life. I have a mountain of receipts from money that I've sent to help people, but its a drop in the bucket for what they need. Love your photo's and narrative, thank-you for sharing.
