Threat display

The hippopotamus is a territorial animal. If they consider their territory breached they threaten interlopers by opening their mouth very wide showing their large ivory teeth.

If you see this display, for your own safety it is best to quickly move away. Hippos can move surprisingly fast on land as well as in water. They do not hesitate to kill, and yes, that includes humans.
