*** Melasti ***

Melasti, is a ceremony for the Hindu people of Bali, Indonesia that is held three days before Nyepi Day (the Balinese New Year). Shrines and effigies and of the gods are carried in a procession from the village to the sea for ritual bathing, prayers and religious offerings.

On the beach, the priests perform a mecaru or exorcism ritual to purify the location and neutralize the power of bhuta kala.

The ritual will continue to the Gods and in particular to Lord Varuna as the master of the sea and resource of holy springs. The holy water is then taken from the sea.
