Wild Atlantic cost of Sagres : 6

On the road to Sagres, Portugal

There is little information about this fort perched spectacularly on the cliffs.

Beliche Fort originated to protect the local tuna fishing trade. The current fort was built on the site of a 1632 fortress that had been destroyed by Sir Francis Drake in 1587 then rebuilt in 1632 then destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.

The fort was a hotel at one stage and tourists visited to see the chapel of Santa Catarina. Unfortunately the fort is now closed to the public due to safety concerns.

Great scenery once again. I'm not surprise the hotel is not open anymore! It looks as if it might tumble into the sea at any moment ...
