This remarkable temple is situated in a river gorge in central Bali. Bali is full of surprises. The majority of the significant temples are vastly different and had their origins at very different times.
Pura Gunung Kawi
If you are willing to descend then ascend about 300 steps in humid heat you will be rewarded by experiencing this extraordinary temple hewn from the stone. The temple is built on both sides of the Pakerisan river.
Hailing from the 11th-century, it is also a funerary complex. At first glance you are astounded by the ten 7-metre-high (23 ft) shrines carved from the sheer cliff. There are also troglodyte-like "funeral monuments ... thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens, minor queens or concubines."
I will respond to your kind comments as soon as I can. Thanks for dropping by!
