Durbar Square, Kathmandu

Treasures in Ruins
An article published on May 9, 2015 describes the loss of the temples in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur.

"The damaged buildings were the heart and soul of the country’s identity. They sustained a sense of pride among all Nepalis. This destruction has been a particular blow to the Newars, whose architectural achievements and historic monuments have greatly suffered." Read full article here

Temple on the left: Kasthamandap
This temple built from the wood of one tree was completely destroyed. Buried under the pile of rubble lies a plaque dating back to 1048. As it was after the earthquake.

Temple to the right: Maju Dega
One of the original temples that stood proud in Durbar square ... gone. Images of the destruction may be seen here

Temple in the background: Narayan Vishnu
This temple was undergoing reconstruction. The scaffolding was not enough to save it. It collapsed also.
