Come with me on a tour of the fabulous ruins of Olympia found in Greece. Olympia, as the name suggests, was the site of the original Olympic Games. They were held every 4 years from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD in honour of the god Zeus. More in Wikipedia
This photo is of the once magnificent Temple of Zeus. This was a Doric masterpiece of the time designed by architect Libon the Elean. Apparently the temple held a 12 metre high statue of Zeus fashioned in gold and ivory. The temple was destroyed by earthquakes in 522 and 551A.D.
Looking at the huge blocks od stone, I noted masses of shells compacted in the friable sedimentary rock of the temples that has lasted so many years. See image here
