Nepali New Year and Bisket Jatra - Bhaktapur 5

The people begin erecting of the pole after priests perform a tantric ritual that includes the sacrifice of a male buffalo. Another trunk is tied to the top of the pole to create a cross. It is decorated with the face mask of Lord Akash Bhairav and bunch of twigs and two long ribbons or flags that represent two serpents.

The pole is erected by the people pulling on ropes and by moving bamboo scaffolding underneath. There are drums, noise and people cheering and whistling. This may continue into the night.
