Had a bad day

Posted by
: Helen : (Helen is photographing in, Australia) on 8 February 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

Black Saturday. Smoke from a frightening bushfire (Bunyip) racing towards my Mother's house in Bunyip. This was taken from the aged care building that was being evacuated that contained members of my family. Thank heavens that everyone and their property are safe. Our deep empathy goes out to the many families that lost their family or property on that 46 degree Celsius day of horror. (Photo courtesy of my son. Taken with his phone)

Wow so scary! where is your mother's house? is everything ok? I live in Warburton in the Yarra Valley and we have been on alert but all is ok for the moment but we are being effected by the Murrindindi/Marysville, Big Pat's Creek and Britannia fires burning just behind us over the hill. what a devastating two days! Hope you are safe!

@Kathryn: Thanks Kathryn. "Wow so scary!" is an understatement. For 'us' everything is OK, but I must say I have shed a tear or two for the many people across our state who have lost so much. I also know it is not over yet. I hope and pray you remain safe. Warburton is a vulnerable place.
I cannot believe the courage of so many emergency workers and volunteers who have just "gone out there and done it for others." They are the true heros. I have posted before recognising these people.

This shot certainly helps to bring the reality home for those of us who have not been this close to a disaster area. Glad to know you're all OK.

@Andrew Gould: Thanks Andrew. NSW has had it's woes at times too, but this is terrible and unfortunately not over yet. The fire near Mum's house is still not out.
