A Bee ... not!Posted by Helen (Melbourne, Australia) on 18 October 2007 in Animal & Insect. I was amazed today. I found this little guy hanging out with all the bees in the buttercups. (OK, I know, they are probably not real buttercups ... bear with me and read on ... you will see why I didn't identify the flowers.) I thought I'd find out what kind of bee it was. Not a bee. Ah ha, thought I ... a wasp! I searched for ages and couldn't find it. Mind you, my search wasn't in vain ... I did learn that wasps never collect pollen, they are uniquely carnivores. I eventually discovered it is a fly! Amazing. This cunning little Hover fly Melangyna damaster mimics wasps to ward off his enemies. I guess they are as confused as I was! Hard to believe isn't it?
