It's a bird's life 3/3Posted by Helen (Melbourne, Australia) on 16 April 2007 in Animal & Insect. Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio These birds are amazingly nonchelant when I stroll nearby. This one was gaily preening itself until it realised I was there. It eyed me off in case I had something for it to eat. They are usually difficult to photograph as their dark feathers and shiny beaks flare in the sun. It's amazing you can get so close to these creatures. Australian pigeons? 19 Apr 2007 3:45pm @eddie: Not quite like pigeons, but not too afraid of people either. These swamphens live around a lake in the Melbourne suburbs that is popular with families for picnics, cycling etc. Part of the lake is fenced to allow birds to live and breed in the surrounding wetland area. It is equipped with pathways and bird hides for birdwatchers and photographers. |
