Myanmar series: Inle Lake

Posted by Helen (Melbourne, Australia) on 19 February 2007 in Transportation and Portfolio.

The Intha boatmen of Inle Lake often row with one leg which not only allows them to rest their arms but leaves their arms free to steer their flat-bottomed boat whilst they lower their nets in and pull them out of the water.

Impressions of Nepal
In the next period of time you will be experiencing a range of photos from my recent visit to Nepal.

It is with great sadness that upon my return home to Australia, I learned of the recent disaster on Mt Everest. During my time in Kathmandu, I met many trekkers heading toward Everest base-camp and many of them keen to make it to the summit.
I am greatly saddened that the greatest casualties occurred amongst the Sherpa community. The people of Nepal are wonderfully open, friendly and generous. I would be greatly comforted if all of you would spend one minute thinking of the Sherpa men who died preparing the pathway for foreigners to climb to the summit.

How on earth do they avoid tipping right over?! It looks really hazy, is this the humidity or fires?

@Bronnie: It is a combination of mist and smoke.

This shot is very interesting, not to mention educational. Whoever came up with the idea of rowing like this was quite clever.
