Myanmar series - Portrait 1Posted by Helen (Melbourne, Australia) on 28 January 2007 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. This special nun has inherited the task of protecting the Po Win Daung Caves near Monywa, Myanmar. These caves, carved from sandstone, contain thousands of Buddha images and murals. Quoted dates range from 5th Century AD to 16th - 18th centuries. It is definitely worth the time to travel there. Untitled from Kyoto, JapanOMG! This is absolutely wonderful! A really really excellent portrait! 28 Jan 2007 7:00am Wayne from Melbourne, AustraliaGreat portrait! I love your choice of the white background to bring her darker skin tone out. And the smile in her eyes are just priceless. Great job! 28 Jan 2007 8:05am Bronnie from Christchurch, New ZealandAnd look at the size of that cigar!!! (I'm presuming that's what it is!!). Awesome expression in her face. 28 Jan 2007 8:22am @Bronnie: The 'cigar' is called a cheroot. Home-made cheroots look this huge one in the countyside and both men and women smoke them or chew betel nut or both. They are made by filling flattened Tha-nut hpet leaves of the Sebesten tree (Cordia dichotom) with shredded tobacco leaves, about an equal amount of chopped tobacco stalks and some kind of additive like tamarind pulp, jaggery (raw sugar cane sugar ) or maybe even cloves and cinnamon. In Burma, home industries make thousands of these (smaller) for the local and export markets. Manuela Photography from Hainburg (near Frankfurt/Main), GermanyPortrait full of emotions and character! The face says millions ... excellent! 28 Jan 2007 2:04pm Michael Zhang from New York City, United StatesI love the colors.
