I could hear an owl at night when we were camping, but it remained frustratingly elusive for two nights. The third evening curiosity got the better of it and it flew down, near the campfire, onto a tree trunk to see what we were doing. I had never tried a night shot with this camera and did not have a tripod, so I took this leaning on a tree trunk. It is impossible shooting into the pitch black night with a digitial camera because you cannot see a thing! The miracle is, I ended up with what I think might be a 'Ninox strenua or Powerful Owl'.

Amazing you were able to capture this image.
I know how elusive owls can be.
I hear them hooting all the time, but have only seen them once and from a very far distance.

Awsome shot! Shooting at night with a digital is extremely frustrating! I know that all to well and what wild creature is going to wait for you to whip out a tripod! It's all shoot and pray!lol You did a wonderful job and that is an excellent picture! I love the red eye it goes perfect with the whole photo!
